True to form to their themes of love and its different vagaries, filmmakers Paolo Villaluna and Ellen Ramos follow up their highly-acclaimed debut film ILUSYON (Rated A 2005, Cinemanila IFF 2006, Pusan IFF 2006) with the tragic tale of Rommel in Selda.

SELDA tells the story of the friendship that develops between two prison inmates, Rommel (Sid Lucero) and Esteban (Emilio Garcia), who acts as his friend and protector. After their jail term, however, their attempt to define and explore the boundaries of their relationship leads to tragedy.

Selda is a return to classicist forms and delivers a stylish, deliberately- paced treatise on love. At moments strange, Selda is a sublime and disquieting portrait of a young man whose search for
happiness, innocence and true love is laden with guilt and doubt.

"TUNAY NA BUHAY?" documentary to screen at Cinevita, March 6

Jasper Chavez Zarzuela's documentary "Tunay na Buhay?" will be screened at the 2nd Cinevita film festival on March 6, 4 P.M., at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex, University of Santo Tomas, España, Manila.

The Cinevita festival, which focuses on positive, life-affirming features, short films, and documentaries, is organized by The Varsitarian, official student publication of UST, and Institute of Religion, with the UST Journalism Society, UST Literary Society, and Concilium Philosophiae.

"Tunay na Buhay?" is a documentary which focuses on a child (Jessa) that belongs to a typical Filipino family. The father, an ice cream vendor, earns for the family, and the mother takes care of it.

The film portrays the family's everyday life and struggles through the point of view of a child. It shows the depth of understanding and the psychological profile that developed on a particular subject due to the environment, circumstances and realities that surround her.

"Tunay na Buhay?" was nominated for a Gawad Urian, with Ditsi Carolino's "Bunso" edging it for the award, and won second place for documentary in the UP Film and Video Awards.

The documentary was one of the entries selected to screen at ABC 5's "Dokyu: Ang Bagong Mata ng Pinoy Documentaries" during its very first season. It later made the rounds of universities and colleges in Metro Manila as part of the Dokyu campus tour.

Zarzuela, a graduate of the UP Film Institute, is now a freelance photographer and also works on several film-related projects.

Jayson Oliveria’s Truth Adjustment

The Joy Of Painting – every painter feels it but not probably the same way as Bob Ross did, the quintessential “happy” landscape painter who use to do painting demos on US TV PBS and broadcasted on local channel RPN 9. For everything he accomplishes in 30 minutes flat, it’s been all the same – the same snow-capped mountains, the same calm waves that are more velvet-like, the stick-thin trees rendered with a sharp edge of the palette knife, the flusterry clouds, the mossy foliage produced by a quick whip of a fan brush – configurable in pigments Bob Ross himself also manufactures, in sap green, van dyke brown, Prussian blue and midnight black. The landscapes are obviously from the Northern hemisphere, but the solitariness and ultra placid calm that would’ve been utopian are more eerie, unworldly, unsafe if only for the conspicuous absence of other creatures like people or even animals. Seeing all of them in succession would’ve made you think that Bob Ross as a hippie visionary who disdains human contact.

It is from this premise that Jayson Oliveria focuses on his latest series of paintings featured in his exhibit at Mag:net Katipunan entitled Truth Adjustment. Six of which are direct copies from Bob Ross instructional book The Joy of Painting, but with some adjustments – a naked boy pissing at the foaming waves in the dark night while a black dog perched on a rocky cliff does the same thing; a huge anaconda blocks the road to a humble cottage set in a peach melba sunset; a plastic-torch- bearing retard Olympian runs over a frozen lake in a snowy mauve haze. These elements, again downloaded from the internet, are Photoshopped in the scenes to emphasize the perilous nature of these landscapes if they ever existed, but made more ridiculous by their placement in such. This becomes another tactic for Oliveria to orchestrate yet another absurdist theatrics of The Sublime which is usually associated with Landscape painting, (and as the progenitor of abstract painting in its sweeping universality.)

Oliveria’s plaster casts of miniature tombstones, 50 in all, with various concepts and seemingly “big” words painted on each (e.g. black holes, exploration, hopes and dreams, history) somewhat pins down the curse on such sublimity, a sublimity too burdened by a lot of concepts, history, and “artistic license” (whatever the hell that means). Art has thus become an omen for nature and through which we can only see grotesqueness in its representation of its demise or destruction or even its perfection. But as to quote another artist, “grotesque only applies to humans, there is no such thing in the natural world” (Robert Langenegger, Jan 25, 2008 Youngstar) and to which Oliveria exultantly rejoins to such supposition : “In that case, painters are naturally grotesque”. And that’s probably the source of the joy of painting, to be ceaselessly confronted by such.

Award-winning film "Foster Child" opens UST Cinevita filmfest on

Brillante Mendoza's fourth full-length feature "Foster Child," which has won three international awards so far, will be the opening film in the 2nd Cinevita film festival on March 5, 9 A.M., at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex, University of Santo Tomas, España, Manila.

The Cinevita festival, which focuses on positive, life-affirming features, short films, and documentaries, is organized by The Varsitarian, official student publication of UST, and Institute of Religion, with the UST Journalism Society, UST Literary Society, and Concilium Philosophiae. Mendoza's "Tirador" (Slingshot) will also be screened on March 7, 3 P.M.

"Foster Child," produced by Robbie Tan's Seiko Films, won the Prix de la Fiction (Prize for Fiction) at the Festival International du Film d'Environnement (International Environmental Film Festival) in Paris, France, Best Actress award for Cherry Pie Picache in the 9th Osian's Cinefan International Film Festival in India, and the Special Jury award in Eurasia (Kazakhstan) .

Picache, which has caught the attention of international film critics once again for her portrayal of a foster mother, is expected to attend the open forum after the screening. The film also stars Eugene Domingo, Jiro Manio, Alwyn Uytingco, Dan Alvaro, Kristofer
King, and Kier Segundo.

Mendoza, who also directed "Masahista" (The Masseur), "Kaleldo" (Summer Heat), and "Manoro" (The Aeta Teacher), will be attending the Las Palmas International Film Festival in Spain where "Foster Child" will vie for the Golden Lady Harimaguada award. He will also receive the "Someone to Watch" award from the Cleveland International Film Festival in the US. He will be back in the country on March 19 to shoot his next full-length feature project.

Ralston Jover, who wrote the script of Centerstage Productions' "Foster Child," "Manoro," "Tirador," and MLR Films' award-winning film "Kubrador," all under the supervision of script
consultant Armando "Bing" Lao, will be at the Fribourg International Film Festival until March 10. He is set to direct his own digital feature "Bakal Boys."

"Foster Child," which was shown in last year's Cannes Film Festival Director's Fortnight, will also compete at the Durban International Film Festival in South Africa, where Picache previously won another Best Actress award for "Kaleldo," in July. It has also been invited to screen at this year's New Directors, New Films in New York. It previously competed at the 9th Cinemanila International Film Festival and opened the 3rd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival.

One of Gawad Tanglaw's Best Films for 2007, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Screenplay and the Young Critics Circle Film Desk 2007 Best Picture and Best Screenplay awardee, "Foster Child" is a narrative of the day when a Filipino family in the slums has to say goodbye to their three-year old foster child John-John because an American couple has come to adopt him.

"Foster Child" was recently released theatrically in France by its distributor Ad Vitam under its French title "John John." It will also be shown theatrically in the United Kingdom under another
distributor Peccadillo Pictures, according to Ferdie Lapuz of Ignatius Films, Canada.

UP Cine Adarna screens nine uncut, adult films

The University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication (UP CMC) hosts a film festival titled “Director’s Cut: Mga Eksenang Dapat Mong Nakita Pero…” from March 5 to 7 at the Cine Adarna in UP Diliman, Quezon City. Opening cocktails are scheduled at 4 p.m. on March 5 (Wednesday) at the UP Cine Adarna lobby.

Nine controversial films will be shown for three days. These are the uncut versions of Bakit May Kahapon Pa? (directed by Joel Lamangan), Laman (Maryo J. de los Reyes), Ang Lalake sa Parola (Jay Altarejos), Duda/Doubt (Cris Pablo), Rome and Juliet (Connie Macatuno), Twilight Dancers (Mel Chionglo), La Vida Rosa (Chito Roño), Tuhog (Jeffrey Jeturian) and Live Show (Jose Javier Reyes). De los Reyes, Pablo, Macatuno, Roño and Jeturian are graduates of UP CMC.

Bakit May Kahapon Pa? (March 5, 5 p.m.) is about a woman, traumatized by the massacre of her family in the 1970s, who plans revenge on the responsible military officer. Laman (March 5, 7 p.m.) focuses on a young couple’s problems mainly caused by a rich businesswoman who lusts for the husband and a gigolo who seduces the wife. Ang Lalake sa Parola (March 5, 9 p.m.) tells the story of a lighthouse caretaker in a conservative rural community who falls in love with another man.

Duda/Doubt (March 6, 5 p.m.) is a tale of infidelity in a relationship between two men while Rome and Juliet (March 6, 7 p.m.) is a romantic journey of two women caught in a web of forbidden love. Twilight Dancers (March 6, 9 p.m.) is about a macho dancer who is pressured to “dance” to the tune of the new global economy.

La Vida Rosa (March 7, 5 p.m.) revolves around a couple’s dangerous life as con artists. Tuhog (March 7, 7 p.m.) is a disturbing yet entertaining movie within a movie where a mother and daughter are abused twice – first by a rapist who happens to be a family member and then by incompetent filmmakers. Live Show (March 7, 9 p.m.) is a story of poor Filipinos forced to perform sexual acts in front of paying customers.

An open forum with the director and other guests follows every screening of the film.

Tickets are priced at P200 for each film, but students with valid IDs can pay only P100. A festival pass which allows one to view all nine films costs P1,000.

Ruben Timawa, on the other hand is a gay literature teacher and a Palanca award-winning writer, decides to enroll in nursing when the object of his desire, a supposed to be rabid leftist leaning street activist, went to

is to become a nurse first.

The two meet at the College of Nursing dean's office. And this meeting opens worlds of possibilities for these two losers.

Uncertainty: an art show by Lirio Salvador, Eugene Jarque, Mac Valdezco and Jonathan Castro

Uncertainty. Not the kind that makes you toss in your bed and lose sleep, but the sort that challenges the very core of your being, the sort that transforms your life from being routine to unpredictable and inspiring. These four individuals dare to defy the sacred covenants of conventional art by utilizing mundane and unlikely objects in their works as well as refusing to do what the rest of the world tells them to do: plan ahead.

Lirio Salvador is a Fine Arts graduate in the Technological University of the Philippines. He
founded a band called Elemento, a multi-dimensional art group which specializes in sound art. Sound art involves no scales, but focuses on sound textures and uses noise to its advantage. Salvador creates his own instruments using everyday materials such as bicycle gears, drain cleaning springs and stainless steel tubes. His works look like objects fresh from a science fiction movie, but with more symmetry and a beauty that is quite unexpected of gears, springs and
tubes.

Eugene Jarque has certain similarities with Salvador---he also graduated from TUP with a Fine Arts degree and he also uses metal (in the form of aluminum sheets) in his art. The similarities, however, end there. Jarque also incorporates receipts, magazine clippings, soil, enamel, gesso, sandpaper and ferric chloride in his creations. The dominant color in his works is gray; witnessing his paintings, one is delightfully surprised that there are so many shades of a color usually considered drab and uninteresting.No wonder Jarque was presented with the Cultural Center of the Philippines' prestigious Thirteen Artists Award, which is given only to progressive young artists with integrity, coherence of ideas, consistence and sensitivity to today's social realities every three years.

Another recipient of the Thirteen Artists Award is Mac Valdezco, an Advertising graduate also from TUP. Using strips of paper, cotton strings, cotton tape, shoelaces and cotton rags, she creates biomorphicfigures that are sometimes whimsical and sometimes loud, but one thing is for sure: they are never the same from first glance. Her art metamorphoses before our very eyes and the beauty of it is that we can never catch how and just what it has become.

Another TUP Fine Arts graduate is Jonathan Castro. As a painter, he explores the interweaving of texture, color and tonal patterns through non-traditional painting techniques and materials. He usually presents a series of works that expresses the ambiance of free play and interaction of shapes and lines to convey a range of emotions.

There you have it---we have four artists telling us that uncertainty is not a bad thing. The beauty of their art proves this to be true.

UP Film Institute celebrates "Wandering, Wondering, Wonderful Women"

UP Film Institute in cooperation with Microdata, BusinessWorld, Globe and GMA pay homage to varied wandering, wondering, wonderful women as the institute celebrates the 18th International Women's Film Festival at the Cine Adarna at the University of the Philippines- Diliman from the 10th – 13th of March 2008.

UP Film Institute recognizes and sympathizes with the pains, sacrifices, negotiations and the victories that the diasporic woman encounters as the growing trend of feminization of the labor force all over the world, with the Philippines as the widest exporter of human labor, continue to exploit and oppress womanity.

The film festival will showcase the best feature and short films by/for women from different parts of the globe. A festival highlight is Malaysian full-length film, handpicked by the 18th IWFF committee, Tan Chui Mui's Love Conquers All, which bagged first prizes from Pusan, Rotterdam and Hong Kong film festivals.

Fora on women and migration, with lectures by women and gender-sensitive directors such as Joyce Bernal, Khryss Adalia and Cathy Garcia-Molina as a highlight, explore discourses on film as a diasporic experience, filming the diasporic experience and the diasporic nomadic woman.

For the festival launch night, in recognition of her legacy as THE CONTRAVIDA of Philippine movies, the sole Diwata awardee is the irreplaceable Ms. Bella Flores. Ms. Flores ahs appeared in more than 100 movies since her career began as a 16-year-old lass in the early
1950s. Even today, no one parallels her iconic looks and acting wit.

Crafting the Diwata trophy is well-known sculptor, Ms. Lia Torralba, who blends together the images of leaf, woman, moon and vessel into her work.

Also for the launch night, to celebrate the role of young women artists and activists in promoting equity and equality for women, UP Diliman University Student Council Chair (incoming Student Regent) Ms. Shahana Abdulwahid will give more significance to the festival with inspirational remarks. UP Open University Chancellor Grace Javier Alfonso and Film Institute Director Anne Marie de Guzman provide the festival overview. Mr. German Moreno, a Philippine cinema stalwart will receive the Diwata Award in behalf of Ms. Bella Flores.

To complete the line up of events for the festival, the women faculty of the UP Film Institute, together with other women artists, mount a multi-media exhibit on Sense and Wandering at the Ishmael Bernal Gallery for the whole month of March, to be curated by woman artist,
Ms. Vivian N. Limpin.

Richard Legaspi's "Ambulancia" wins best short in filmfest for health

"Ambulancia," a short film which tells of a painful twist in an ambulance driver's belief that a dying patient can be saved by running over stray animals on the streets, won best short narrative in the first Quisumbing-Escandor Film Festival for Health held at the Philamlife Center for the Arts, United Nations Avenue, Manila last February 21, Thursday night.

Director/writer/producer Richard Legaspi and production manager Seymour Barros Sanchez were on hand to receive the trophy designed by National Artist Napoleon Abueva and a plaque of recognition from Mu Sigma Phi, the first medical fraternity in the Philippines and in Asia.

"Santigwar," an entry of director Gerald Ian Mendez, producer Charlene Obumani, and writer Johner Cañeba of the University of Saint Anthony from Iriga, Camarines Sur, won the grand prize, the Honorato Quisumbing and Johnny Escandor award for best film. "Kasangkapan," directed by Carmelo Soberano of the Marinduque State College, and "Rx: Agap," helmed by King Mark Baco of the University of the Philippines Film Institute, were adjudged best documentary and best experimental film, respectively. Aside from a similar trophy and plaque, the "Santigwar" team will also receive P100,000 in cash while the directors and producers of "Ambulancia," "Rx: Agap," and "Kasangkapan" will each get P50,000. The winners and other film festival finalists were screened from February 18 to 20 at the Cine Adarna in UP Diliman.

"Ambulancia," which stars Alan Paule and Nor Domingo, was previously exhibited in the Young Cinema Night of the 2007 Cinemanila International Film Festival and the Asian Film Academy (AFA) Fellows' Night in Busan, South Korea. Legaspi also had the able support of director of photography Albert Banzon, assistant director Jules Katanyag, AD/producer/editor Anna Isabelle Matutina, co-producer Eloisa Espino-Sanchez, production manager/musical scorer Pam Miras, and production designers Grace Orbon, Sonja Completo, and Benay Reyes.

Legaspi, a faculty of the University of the East – Caloocan College of Fine Arts (UE CFA), was selected last year along with "Ligaw Liham" director of photography Carlo Mendoza as the only Filipinos among the 24 successful candidates from all over Asia who were offered fellowships by the AFA, an educational program that trains aspiring Asian filmmakers and cinema enthusiasts through workshops, one-on-one mentoring and a short film production project, to raise the bar on film production to further the future of Asian cinema. It was held in collaboration with Pusan International Film Festival, Dongseo University, and Korean Film Academy.

Legaspi, UE CFA alumnus and recipient of the UE Award for Exemplary Performance in Visual Arts, teaches Advertising and Painting. He is also a director, assistant director, and production designer for Red Room Productions, Pixel Art Media Production Co., and Digital Cheese. He underwent workshops under award-winning scriptwriter Ricky Lee and directed films such as "Kahon" (official entry to the 2006 Viewpoints of the World Festival, finalist in the End Frame Video Art Project, in competition at the 2006 One Minute International Short Film Festival (OMISFF), Netherlands, and finalist in the Smart Cuts of 2005 .MOV International Short Film Festival), "Pintuan" (in competition at the 2006 OMISFF), and "Makatang Luneta," (third place at the 2006 Cinemadali Film Festival).

SAKDAL pop-rock musical to be re-staged at University of Makati

From the same theatre company that staged the critically acclaimed ALAMAT last year at the Music Museum, AGHAM Theatre Company is again set to take the center stage with Patrick Almaden's "SAKDAL," an original Filipino pop-rock musical on the life of Jesus Christ.

The musical has been staged at the Makati Parks and Garden Amphitheatre last 2006 to a resounding success. It has attracted the attention of the University president, Prof. Tomas B. Lopez and City Mayor Jejomar Binay which prompted them to produce it this year.

"SAKDAL," meaning perfect, is an interpretation of the life of Jesus Christ in parallel to our issues today and how his teachings being so needed to be heard now in time of political and economic crisis. Jesus as the center of Christianity is not only a symbol of faith and hope but also a proactive example of reform and movement.

Set in the last few days of Jesus Christ, Sakdal presents a more humane Jesus who is baffled about his mounting popularity among common people. And this popularity drew diverse reactions and concerns among his disciples especially in the part of Judas Iscariot who wants him to maintain a low profile. Through this depiction of Christ, we will highlight the obvious message of life, truly a rude awakening, a reflection on how we are living the life he sacrificed.

With a true to form realistic set, there is no trailblazing statement or justification for the style. It is not abstract; it is not impressionistic or stylized. What you see is what you get. The set plays its role in its true sense. A background for the actors, setting for the period and a visual foundation for the music. Nothing overwhelming. It is as Israel or as "Is-real" as it can get.

The production aims to strengthen solidarity among artistic groups in the University through active participation in the field of arts engaged in the enrichment of genuine artistry of our folk-cultures. "Sakdal" will also coincide with the commemoration of our Lord's suffering this coming Lenten season.

Directed by Patrick Almaden, Sakdal features student-thespians, employees and alumni from the university. This two-hour musical is also supported by the UMAK Chorale, Art Nouveau, and Amor A Bailar, Musicians for Peace, Kundiman, Film Society and The Makati Collegian.

"Tirador" proves Pinoy achievement

There is a gentle revolution happening in the Philippines. It is neither political nor economic. The revolt happens in the very heart of filmmaking. Its proponents and followers are the numerous film "guerillas" who have finally found an avenue to express their creativity and freedom. There is a breeze of fresh air which invigorates the contemporary scenario of Philippine Cinema. The Filipino achievement in this era of indie (short for independent), experimental and digital filmmaking has come. "Tirador," in winning the Caligari Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 15, 2008, proves that this Pinoy revolution works- in the world of filmmaking.

This "new epoche" of filmmaking in the Philippines brings out a new breed of young and dynamic filmmakers. This is the advent of the independent digital filmmaking. The emergence of affordable and user-friendly digital cameras and editing softwares make this rapid evolution possible resulting to a new film consciousness in the Philippines with a profound interest in festivals abroad, like the 58th Berlin Film Festival. The Berlinale this year was an avenue where the metamorphosis of filmmaking was acknowledge and admired. It was an historical event for the Philippines. This prestigious, glamorous and one of the biggest film festivals in the world recognized the international quality of digital Filipino films. For the first time in the long history of Philippine Cinema that six Filipino films were shown at the Berlinale from February 7 to 17, 2008. Indeed, this Berlinale documents the greatness of this creative spirit present in various characteristics of Filipino filmmaking- experimental, documentary, live musical accompaniment and screening with three projections.

"This is one of the hardest films I have shot." Director Brilliante Mendoza admits the challenges he encountered in making "Tirador" (Slingshot). He spoke before the international audience after the first screening, the European Premiere of his film at the Colosseum Cinema in Berlin on February 9, 2008. He worked on three cameras to shot the scenes in the dangerous areas of Manila, particularly in Quiapo in order to capture the life and operation of poor small-time crooks, the "little criminals" who do dirty tricks to earn money. His guerilla film-making has been recognized around the world. "Tirador" has been shown at film festivals in Toronto, Singapore, Granada, Pusan and in Marraketch where it won the International Special Jury Prize.

Director Mendoza also impressed the judges in Berlin that they awarded "Tirador" with the much-coveted Caligari Award 2008. It is the first Filipino Film to win this award which is given to a film in the Berlinale Category of International Forum of Young Films. It is the most important recognition of a film under this category. This award, given for the 23rd time this year, has been awarded to films which are thematically innovative and stylistically creative.

This award includes an endowment of 4,000 € prize from the sponsors: the Bundesverband kommunalen Filmarbeit, the German Federal Association of 150 cultural cinemas and the film journal "Film-Dienst".

The judges gave the Award to "Tirador" with this reason: "Well-thoughtout paradigmatic sequencing shows daily survival between pickpocketing, gambling, part-time-jobs, arbitrary police acts and corrupt politicians. Dramatic highpoints are blended into scenes of everyday life." Indeed this film blends fiction and reality to portray the life of street criminals who are exposed to crimes, drugs, and abuses. What was originally planned as a documentary film turned out to be a feature film with the local election and the Holy Week as its backdrop. "Tirador" refers figuratively to somebody who makes a hit (tira) which refers to hired killer, drug addict, thief and the like. Director Mendoza workled closely with the film's writer Ralston Joel Jover and even interviewed "little criminals", went to their houses and in places where they do their petty crimes in order to show authenticity in his film which was originally planned to be documentary.

The corruption of politicians and abuses of police officials are also portrayed in the film. The drama of Philippine elections with rampant vote-buying and empty promises of policians were also shown. The movie ends with the little criminals joining the people in a prayer rally in Manila, an event which was attended by senatorial candidates who promised a better life and future for the people.

Director Mendoza was born 1960 in San Fernando, Pampanga and studied Advertising at the University of Santo Tomas. He worked in television and theater before focusing into filmmaking. His fifth major film gathers film legends like Jaclyn Jose, Julio Diaz and several young actors whose films have been shown and recognized in film festivals abroad: Jiro Manio ("Magnifico", Best Children Film at Berlinale 2004), Nathan Lopez ("Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros", Best Children Feature Film and Teddy Award, Berlinale 2006), Kristofer King ("Ang Babae sa Breakwater", Cannes 2004) and Coco Martin ("Masahista", Locarno 2005). His major films which were shown in major international film festivals which include: "Masahista" (The Masseur, 2005), "Kaleldo" (Summer Heat, 2006), "Manoro" (The Aeta Teacher, 2006) and "Foster Child", 2007. Director Mendoza was joined in Berlin by other "Tirador" staff: Producer Ferdinand Lapuz of Centerstage Productions, Script Supervisor Armando Lao and Actor Coco Martin.

Indeed, "Tirador" and the other Filipino films who made it to this year's festival are products of the blooming independent film genre brought about by the prevailing "digital revolution" in the Philippines. Filmmakers are more free to try new tricks and express themselves using unconventional methods. And their efforts and creative achievements are being recognized, if barely at home, then in many international film festivals, like at the Berlinale.

Pinoys win top Asian TV awards

FILIPINOS FROM both sides of the network wars won in major categories at the 12th Asian Television Awards, held at the Suntec International Convention Center in Singapore on Thursday.

Current affairs

The GMA 7 documentary show, “Reporter’s Notebook,” topped the Best Current Affairs Program category for its coverage of the war in Lebanon. It bested entries from Korea, Singapore and Taiwan.

“Reporter’s Notebook” is hosted by news reporters Maki Pulido and Jiggy Manicad.

Team effort

Manicad, who also produced the winning episode, told the Inquirer via SMS: “It’s a team effort. The feeling [of winning] is great and humbling at the same time. Lebanon was one of the most dangerous coverages our program has [experienced so far]. We never thought we could come up with good material in that situation—especially one that would merit the attention of the Asian TV Awards.”

Co-host Pulido said: “It’s a great high. It doubles the pressure to produce better stories in the interest of our countrymen.”

Program Manager Clyde Mercado agreed. “Serving the people through this show is rewarding enough,” he said, but this [award] is a very special bonus.”

Best news program

The ABS-CBN late-night newscast “Bandila” won Best News Program for its coverage of the Subic Rape Case Promulgation. It bested entries from Malaysia, Taiwan, India, as well as two Philippine news shows (GMA 7’s “24 Oras” and ABS-CBN’s “TV Patrol World”).

Said Maria Ressa, senior vice president of ABS-CBN’s News and Current Affairs: “‘Bandila’ is just a little over a year old, and we are grateful that its work has been recognized by our peers in the region and the world. We wanted to put together our ideas of nationalism with a faster production pace and more succinct and analytical reporting. ‘Bandila’ has already been named one of the Top 4 newscasts in the world by the International Academy of Arts & Sciences, making it the first time ever that a Philippine network has received this recognition at the Emmys.”

Acting trophy

Gina Pareño topped the Best Drama Actress category, besting performers from New Zealand, Thailand, India and Singapore. She won for portraying the troubled mother of three mentally ill children in the “Rehas” episode of ABS-CBN’s “Maalaala Mo Kaya.”

“We were only given 30 seconds in our thank-you speech,” recalled Pareño. “I was happy and nervous at the same time. I dedicated my award to my family and our countrymen.”

The episode was megged by Jeffrey Jeturian, who also directed Pareño in the internationally acclaimed film “Kubrador.”

According to its web site, the Asian Television Awards aims to “recognize and reward program and production excellence” in the region.

Repression or paranoia? Filmmakers cry foul over short films' 'X' rating

Filmmakers and activists screened two films banned by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), "A Day in the Life of Gloria" and "Mendiola", in protest of what they called "repression" by the Arroyo administration.

The "X" rating given by the MTRCB to the two films resulted in their exclusion from a short film festival called "Kontra-Agos" .

The films were shown during a press conference on Friday by filmmakers and activists to express alarm over what they perceive to be an attempt to suppress media coverage of the failed rebellion in Makati led by former Navy officer turned Senator Antonio Trillanes and Army Brigadier General Danny Lim.

Short filmmaker King Catoy said, "Nananawagan kami sa mga kapwa natin artists, i-defy natin ang admnistrasyong ito, this is martial law (We call on our fellow artists to defy this administration. This is martial law)."

During the press conference, National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera joined other artists and activists in having their hands tied, recalling images of ABS-CBN reporters and crew who were handcuffed and detained by police in the aftermath of the Makati incident.

Lumbera said recent events, including the so-called "censorship" of an artist's collective in Angolo, Rizal, bear out a clear and present danger to artists and to freedom of expression.

"Mayroon litaw na panganib sa atin. Karapatan natin magkaroon ng layang ipakita ang katotohanan (There is an obvious threat against us. It is our right to have the freedom to tell the truth)," said Lumbera.

MTRCB reviewer Mark Castrodes however dismissed the artists' accusations as baseless conspiracy theories. According to Castrodes, the films were given an X-rating because they put the government in a bad light.

One of the films, "A Day in the Life of Gloria", is in animated format and shows a cartoon caricature of President Arroyo saying "I am sorry" after which her nose begins to grow. It is a scene that recalls the fairy tale character Pinocchio, whose nose elongates whenever he tells a lie.

Castrodes said that contrary to the artists' wild claims, there is no "institutionalized political repression" and that the film reviewers simply did their job.

"We are not in cahoots with anyone else here, for us, it was simply a day's work", he said, adding that the filmmakers could have appealed the rating and asked for a second review but they chose to no longer do so.

MTRCB Hit Anew for Censorship

“The MTRCB will never allow the propagation of films which carries dissenting views to the current administration,” said an independent filmmaker whose work is scheduled to be shown at Indie Sine in Robinson’s Galeria December 5-11 but was rated “X” by the board.

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) was criticized anew for censoring two short films created by independent film makers.

Southern Tagalog Exposure’s (ST Exposure) A Day in the Life of Gloria Arrovo and Sine Patriyotiko’s Mendiola have been rated “X” or disapproved from public exhibition by the MTRCB. Said films are part of an eight-film compilation scheduled to be shown at the Kontra Agos Resistance Film Festival on December 5-11, Indie Sine, Robinson’s Galleria.

In an interview, RJ Mabilin, director of A Day in the Life of Gloria Arrovo, said that the MTRCB justified the rating by saying that the films “undermine the faith of the people in government.”

An animation, which got an honorable mention award from this year’s Gawad Cultural Center of the Philippines, A Day in the Life of Gloria ArroVo is a political satire.

Mendiola, on the other hand, is a short documentary critical of the Arroyo government’s calibrated preemptive response (CPR).

Another short film, Holy Bingo, was initially rated “X” but later got a PG-13 classification. The film,
Mabilin said, is critical of the Catholic Church.

Mabilin said, “It goes to show that there exists institutionalized repression. The MTRCB has the final say whether a film should be viewed or not. It will never allow the propagation of films which carries dissenting views to the current administration.”

In September, the MTRCB also rated “X” the compilation of films titled Rights which deals with the human rights situation in the country.

In an email that reached Bulatlat, award-winning director Carlitos Siguion Reyna said, “This is the
latest instance of broad-sided political censorship, so soon after the “X”-ing of similar political short films in the “Rights”… also, so soon after the content alteration done by the National Press Club of the Neo-Angono Arts Collective’s press freedom mural.”

ST Exposure’s Mabilin said that they will continue to resist all forms of censorship. He said they will continue utilizing alternative venues to propagate their films. Tampere International Short Film Festival

1. OBJECTIVES
The XXXVIII Tampere International Short Film Festival will take place March 5-9, 2008. Tampere Film Festival is an independent short film festival with an international and national competition. The competitions are open and free for all who want to submit a film for the preview. It is organized by the association Tampere Film Festival and receives financial support from the City of Tampere, the Finnish Film Foundation, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European union Media-programme, Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture in Finland and other public and private partners. The Festival is acknowledged by the International Federation of Film Producers Association FIAPF/IFFPA and abides by its instructions and regulations. It is a member of the International Film Conference ISFC and of the European Coordination of Film Festivals eeig.

2. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Admitted are all films and videos of all genres not exceeding a length of 30 minutes. Films must have been completed on January 1st, 2006 or after. The selection will be made on completed productions. In exceptional cases the Festival reserves the right to accept films of longer duration. Films which have been shown or awarded at other international film festivals are allowed to compete.

3. DEADLINE AND SUBMISSION
The submission deadline is December 1, 2007.
The following material has to be sent together with each submitted film:

1) a VHS copy or a DVD of the film (max 3 films per copy)
2) a FULLY filled entry form
3) a complete list of dialogue, commentary and/or text inserts in original language AND in english
4) at least 1 photo
For preview screenings only VHS tapes and DVD discs will be accepted. Tapes or DVDs must be sent by mail or courier service and carry the declaration: "FOR TEMPORARY, CULTURAL PURPOSE ONLY. NO COMMERCIAL VALUE."

4. SELECTION
The Festival will select the films for the International Competition from all entered contributions during December 2007 and January 2008. Any filmmaker, producer, organisation or other party can submit films directly to the festival office. Entrants will be notified of the selection results by mid-February 2008.

For festival screenings the Festival accepts 16 mm and 35 mm film prints, Betacam SP PAL and Digi Beta PAL and DVD. The screening copies must be at the Festival office by February 11, 2008. The films will be electronically subtitled in both Finnish and English. 9. JURIES AND PRICES
The organizers will nominate an international jury of five members, one of whom is Finnish. The jury will award the following prizes to the film directors:

1) Grand Prix: Festival trophy
"Kiss" & 5000 € for the best film in the International Competition
2) three Category Prizes:
"Kiss" & 1500 € each
3) Diplomas of Merit
A Diploma of Merit will be awarded to the best film of the International Competition voted by the audience. A Participation Diploma will be given to every film selected to participate on the International Competition.

10. INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM MARKET
A film market for accredited professionals will be open during the Festival. All the preview copies are automatically entered in the film market selection and made available for individual viewing unless stated otherwise in a written instruction to be submitted to the festival by February 8, 2008.

Film Market is open for accredited professionals only. The deadline for the copies sent only for the market is February 8, 2008.

11. NON-SPECIFIED CASES
The Festival Directorate will decide on any cases of doubt which have not been mentioned in these regulations (in accordance with FIAPF International Regulations). Participation in the Festival implies recognition without reservation of these regulations and the entry form (in accordance with the regulations) .

Cine Veritas Human Rights Film Festival

UP Film Institute’s Cine Veritas Human Rights Film Festival for the year is all set from December 3 to 8. The Philippine gala premiere of Brillante Mendoza’s Tirador serves as opening salvo for the weeklong 2007 edition of the film festival that promises to be the biggest since it was first mounted in 2003.

Main films in exhibition come from across the globe led by the world premiere of New Zealand filmmaker Dean Hapeta’s follow-up to his 2003 rap documentary Ngatahi that made it to Sundance; Mexico and Spain’s co-production Pan’s Labyrinth; Italian Embassy’s presentation Salvatore—That’ s Life; the two-part program from Productions Multi-Monde of Canada comprised of Bledi, Sparks of War, Rebel Music Americas, Rebel Music Quebec; the Chinese documentary on an AIDS-afflicted family To Live Is Better Than to Die; the maquiladora murder drama Bordetown starring Jennifer Lopez and another Latin American cinema pride To Be Happy in Chile.

Filipino filmmakers take centerstage. Brillante Mendoza is represented not only by the opening film Tirador but also by the Cannes Director’s Fortnight entry Foster Child. Jim Libiran fields the Cinemalaya Best Picture Tribu that went on to vie for the top plum in Pusan and is also slated for Berlin International Forum of New Cinema come February 2008. Lino Tañada showcases the screen adaptation of the late author Orlando Nadres’ seminal play on repressed sexuality, Hanggang Dito Na Lamang at Maraming Salamat. Other Pinoy filmmakers with works in the festival selection include Vivian Limpin and Ma. Kathrina S. Loreños (Kunyang); She Andes and Mike Juancho Galang (Estropa) and Eric Tandoc (810logy).

Cine Veritas is UP Film Institute’s annual film festival that aims to uphold and raise consciousness on issues of human dignity and rights. In addition to screenings, myriad activities including fora, concerts, street dance parade, wall climbing and a string of gallery events highlight this year’s edition of the filmfest.

MANILA, Philippines - "Poets, too, must know how to fight." Uncle Ho Chi Minh might have had Amado V. Hernandez in mind when he penned that line. While Ho was rallying his countrymen to drive the French out of their homeland, Hernandez—a poet who knew how to fight—was languishing in the New Bilibid Prison on a subversion charge. This, however, did not stop him from composing his greatest masterpieces. The grateful Vietnamese named their capital after Ho, but how many Filipinos remember Ka Amado, our first National Artist for Literature? How many are still stirred on first reading "Panata sa Kalayaan" or "Isang Dipang Langit"? Or have their conscience awakened upon reading "Mga Ibong Mandaragit"? All too few. Yet Hernandez's work is as relevant today as when he first wrote them half a century ago: the social injustices that he railed and fought against are still here, and so are the forces that put him in jail. The more things change…

On Nov. 30, a much-deserved tribute will be paid to Ka Amado's legacy as the Cultural Center of the Philippines, in cooperation with the Amado V. Hernandez Resource Center, stages "Amado, Minamahal…," a concert featuring the poet's works. No ordinary concert, "Amado, Minamahal…" brings together the collective talents of National Artists Bienvenido Lumbera (Literature, 2006), Napoleon V. Abueva (Sculpture, 1976), Ben Cabrera (Painting, 2006), and Salvador Bernal (Theater and Design, 2003), who collaborated on the script, stage design, posters and visuals, and costumes, respectively.

The concert will also feature the music of the late National Artist Lucio San Pedro (Music, 1991), which will be performed by a hundred-voice choir composed of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philippine Madrigal Singers and the Bonifacio Choir, and accompanied by a pure dance performance by the Ballet Philippines. Set to be staged at the CCP main theater, "Amado, Minamahal…" will be directed by Chris Millado.

Says scriptwriter Bien Lumbera: "The script for 'Amado, Minamahal…' has been structured according to the three dominant themes of his poetry, namely, freedom, justice and human rights." He adds, "The three themes are the pressing concerns of our society today as the present administration has allowed the military to exercise unwarranted power to enforce compliance with its political designs." Lumbera believes that Hernandez's works, though written in the 1950s, still have a message for contemporary Filipinos.

Explains this National Artist for Literature: "After he was released, Ka Amado was simply transported from the repressive confines of a prison cell to the repressive world outside where an anti-subversion law hang like a sword of Damocles over the heads of writers whose ideas could be interpreted as bearing traces of socialist or communist ideologies." But Hernandez, says Lumbera, continued to think and write as a free individual. His works have much to say to Filipinos today. "His 'Panata sa Kalayaan' is a message to the post-EDSA and post-9/11 Philippine society under the Arroyo regime, where the Human Security Act hangs over the heads of men and women who vigilantly struggle for freedom, justice and human rights." Hernandez was the epitome of the engaged artist, a man of action who nevertheless still had the sensitivity to give voice to the inchoate cries of the suffering masses. The need for men like him hasn't diminished, says Lumbera.

Hernandez was born in 1903 in Hagonoy, Bulacan but grew up in Tondo, Manila. He was only 19 when he joined Aklatang Bayan, a literary group which included established Tagalog writers such as Lope K. Santos and Jose Corazon de Jesus. In 1932, he married stage actress Atang de la Rama, who would also become a National Artist. When the Japanese invaded the Philippines, Hernandez became a guerrilla. It is believed that he first encountered the ideas of socialism through the Hukbalahap movement. After the war, Hernandez became a Manila councilor and a labor leader, organizing the biggest strike ever in Manila in 1947, and coming to the attention of the military. In 1951, during a crackdown on the Huk rebellion then raging in Central Luzon, Hernandez was arrested and eventually charged with rebellion with murder, arson and robbery—a complex crime unheard of in Philippine legal history. The case became a celebrated civil rights issue, drawing the support of such legal luminaries as Claro M. Recto, Jose P. Laurel and Claudio Teehankee. Nevertheless, Hernandez wasn't released until 1956, and he wasn't acquitted until 1964 in a landmark decision that is still invoked to this day.

By that time, Hernandez had already written the works that he would be remembered for. He died in 1970, but his words live on: "Pilipino akong sa pambubusabos ay hindi susuko! (I am a Filipino who will never, ever give in to oppression). "

ME’GUYAYA (Documentary)

In 2003, an active and concerned group of people in Upi, Shariff Kabunsuan initiated a festival that would unite all residents in thanking God for the abundant harvest. Since then, it has become a big town event that celebrates the richness and diversity of the Muslim, Christian and Lumad peoples of Upi.

The documentary delves on how the Me’guyaya serves as a catalyst for cultural unity as everyone gets involved in the festivities.

TRANQUIL TIMES (documentary)

He returns to Sulu to start a new life after being reunited with his family.

Arthur returns to Manila after a short stay in Sulu, bringing with him memorable stories and truths about the island feared by many as a dangerous place to go.

How amidst the hardships and diversity in culture they had all managed to bounce back and become united.

Submission is sweet, to do otherwise is bitter. Their incomprehension is at the maximum level that wrong becomes right, and what is right becomes wrong. To play “Bingo” inside a church is never questioned and is labeled licensed by some unprincipled Catholic Church leaders. Christianity is the largest religion and surely many of its followers are destitute enough to consider “Bingo” inside their church as a source of momentary abundance.

Bingo reveals all: People are born. People are being baptized. People marry. People die. All these should have been valuable and symbolic, yet have gone awry and worthless instead. Why? Because of people’s shallowness and ignorance.

It dissects the government’s contradictory attempts to downplay its threat while at the same time justifying escalating military operations in the region.

Against this backdrop, the documentary then probes allegations of US military involvement in the war.

Putot (Visayan for "small") is the heartfelt story of a young boy growing up at a squatter colony by the sea. A friendship begins between the two.

Shot on location near Manila Bay, this emotional story premiered at the 2006 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, where its director Emmanuel "Jeck" Cogama won Best Director. Putot has been shown around the world.

Young people, like Melonie Maglia of Ifugao, are longing for leaders with conscience and competence, not public officials who, according to Fr. Vhong Navarro, invent projects for selfish interest. Mayor Jesse Robredo and Allen Reondanga of Naga City prove that good examples do exist. They employ I-governance and community participation in their struggle to uplift the condition of the Bicol region.

EheM!Plo shows that indeed corruption is violence. If this is trure, then stopping corruption and spreading integrity are now the new ways of working for peace.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Kindly read the rules and regulations carefully. The AAP shall strictly implement the rules published herein. All members/competitors are required to comply.

GENERAL RULES

1. The 60th AAP Annual Art Competition 2007 is open to all bonafide members.

2. Regular Members may join all five (5) categories.

3. Associate Members 16-20 years of age as of submission date may join only the Special Categories, namely Art Photography and Drawing.

4. MEMBERSHIP AND FEES:

a. Membership should be renewed on or before the date of submission by paying the annual dues. Non-members who wish to join should apply first.

b. Regular Membership is open to artists, Fine Arts students, art enthusiasts and cultural workers 21 years old and above.

c. Associate Membership is open to artists 16-20 years old as of submission date who may be students, art enthusiasts or cultural workers.

d. For bonafide members and applicants, please submit two (2) recent 1x1 photos for the AAP Identification Card.

e. For new members, please submit a comprehensive resume, two (2) recent 1x1 photos for the AAP Identification Card and fill up the AAP Bio Data.

f. Regular Membership Fee is Two Hundred Fifty Pesos (Php 250.00) for both renewal and new membership.

g. Associate Membership Fee is Two Hundred Fifty Pesos (Php 250.00) as well.

h. A participant may join several categories, provided that ONLY ONE ENTRY PER CATEGORY will be submitted.

i. Entry Fee is Two Hundred Fifty Pesos (PhP 250.00) per category.

5. ALL ARTWORKS SHALL BE FOR SALE. Artist prices are subject for review by the AAP Board. The AAP is entitled to a 30% share of the sale value.

6. An entry is considered to be an artistic product of an individual. NO GROUP ENTRIES SHALL BE ALLOWED. All artworks should be the original artistic creation of the participating artist. Non-compliance will result to disqualification of entry or revocation of title.

7. All entries must be SIGNED. Information to be written on the Entry Details Form and attached at the back of entry: artistâ€™s name, address, contact details, category, entry title and price.

8. Each entry should be accompanied by a 5 x 7 (5R) colored photograph of the artwork, with the same information as above written on the Entry Details Form and attached at the back of photo. You may also avail of the services of the AAP Official Photographer for a minimal fee.

9. Entries for the Painting, Mixed Media, Art Photography and Drawing Categories should be framed and have provisions for hanging. Pedestals are optional for entries to the Sculpture Category.

10. SUBMISSION DATE: NOVEMBER 24, 2007, Saturday, from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. Entries in the Painting and Mixed Media Categories are to be submitted at the GSIS Museo ng Sining at the CCP Complex, Roxas Boulevard, while entries for the Sculpture, Art Photography and Drawing should be submitted at the Kanlunganng Sining, Rizal Park, Manila.

11. All accepted entries will automatically be featured on the 60th AAP Annual Art Catalogue 2007. However, due to limited exhibition space, entries will be pre-screened by a panel of judges. Only entries which pass pre-screening will be exhibited in the above venues.

12. All decisions by the Board of Judges are final.

Art Photography

Medium could either be film or digital, but no entries on disk or e-mail will be accepted.

Take 2 for Mindanaoan Revolutionary Artist

A two-day run last month of a rare art exhibit left the public clamoring for another opportunity to view the genius of an "artist of the people's struggle." The event featured some 100 drawings and paintings of a Philippine countryside in resistance, all done by Mindanaoan Parts Bagani.

It was an art exhibit that would have surely sent the big guns of the National Press Club squirming. Now, they can do just that.

Due to popular demand, the works of artist Parts Bagani will again be shown in a four-day exhibit dubbed as "Sining Luwal ng Kanayunan." It shall open with a brief program at 10 AM, November 26, 2007 at Galleria 2, Faculty Center, University of the Philippines, Diliman Quezon City. A forum on art and the freedom of expression is scheduled at 9 AM on November 29, 2007, Recto Hall, UP Facuty Center. Popular artists have been invited to perform.

While most artists bask in the atmosphere of Metro Manila and the big cities elsewhere, Parts Bagani opted to stay in the countryside where he was born. In Mindanao, he experienced the turmoil of conflicting forces, and painted a terrain of warfare. His works show his fluency in imaging an environment that is taboo for many an artist, but of which he has gained a profound understanding.

His art abounds with scenes of resistance even of warriors in repose, of schools in open bamboo structures in the forest, of people singing songs of victory, of battered shoes and the lowly rice pot. But most of all, there are the endless mountains and hills that have become host to the struggle itself.

The exhibit is sponsored by the First Quarter Storm Movement, Tag-ani Performing Arts Society, Asosasyon ng mga Kabataang Artista, Kritiko at Iskolar ng Sining at Kultura (UP ASTERISK), UP Alay Sining, Kabataang Artista para sa Tunay na Kalayaan (Karatula) and the Congress of Teachers for Nationalism and Democracy.

The exhibit is a fund-raising project for the benefit of cancer-stricken UP Prof. Monico Atienza.

A WORD FROM THE AUTHOR

The seed for Pelicula was innocuous enough: very casual talk about some Internet rumour or other. Somehow, that spark collided with my long-abiding interest in live-action superheroics, and a novel was born.

Having completed the trio of Penumbra novellas (Takod, Craving, and Parman), I felt ready to tackle a longer story, and Pelicula appeared to have enough meat to warrant a novel-length treatment.

What ultimately emerged was not only something I hadn’t exactly anticipated, it was also a lot of things I’d never really attempted before in my fiction: it was a parody, a satire, a romance, and had gobbets of words and dialogue in Filipino and Taglish.

I’m proud of Pelicula, and extremely thankful to three individuals who helped in its genesis and in getting it where it is today: Nida, who saw it first in its entirety and gave it a thumbs up; and Carl and Budj, for all the support and help over the years.

And now that it’s toddling off onto the World Wide Web, I can only hope it amuses, entertains, and enlightens you, just as much as it amused, entertained, and enlightened me, in the process of putting it all together.

MANILA, Philippines - The local independent movie scene continues to thrive and flourish.

Low-budget Pinoy films keep winning awards and getting rave reviews abroad; filmmakers earn grants from foreign-based financiers; and production outfits are always on the lookout for fresh Filipino talents through casting calls.

The government wants to help the movement and the mainstream industry as well by promoting the Philippines as an attractive film site. Last week, Malacañang issued a presidential executive order for the creation of the Philippine Film Export Services Office.

According to the newly signed Executive Order 674, the Export Services Group (ESG) "shall facilitate the institutionalization of a one-stop-shop system for foreign film and television productions."

Aside from pitching the Philippines as a location site, the ESG will provide a direct link between foreign film producers and local artists, technical crew and facilities.

The agency is under the "administrative and technical supervision" of the Film Development Council, headed by Jacky Atienza. It shall be composed of an executive director and representatives from the departments of Tourism, Trade and Industry, Interior and Local Government, National Defense, the bureaus of Customs, Internal Revenue, Immigration, as well as from the Cinema Evaluation Board, Film Academy of the Philippines and the private sector, specifically from the movie and TV industries.

The ESG's chair is film producer Digna Santiago. Its first task was to join President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at the recent business forum in India, where a Bollywood film producer has committed to shoot a film in the Philippines in December.

The ESG will also serve at the country's link to the Asian Film Commission Network (AFCNet), an association that aims to attract film productions to come to Asia. The ESG represented the country at the AFCNet launch in Pusan, South Korea in October.

'Signos'

Alfred Aloysius Adlawan's "Signos" bagged the Best Foreign Film Award in the 1st Lone Star International Film Festival held in Fort Worth, Texas from Nov. 7 to 11.

This is the first festival that "Signos" joined after its local release in August. The horror-drama film that tackles estrangement and going back to one's roots features Luis Alandy, Irma Adlawan, Ricky Davao, Nancy Castiglione and Chx Alcala.

"We didn't expect to win any award because the event wasn't a horror-fest," Adlawan told Inquirer Entertainment on Monday.

Chicago film festival

Meanwhile, the 4th Chicago Filipino American Film Festival was held from Nov. 9 to 11 at the Chopin Theater. It featured a total of 10 filmsâ€•full-length features, music videos and documentaries, according to its website http://www.cfaff.org.

The Chicago Filipino American Film Festival was created in 2003 by the Filipino American Network (FAN). It aims to provide an opportunity for Filipino and Filipino-American directors, writers and actors in Chicago to showcase their works.

'Tirador (Slingshot)'

Brillante Mendoza's "Tirador" ("Slingshot") continues to get rave reviews from influential industry figures, most recently from Toronto International Film Festival programmer Cameron Bailey, who said the movie shows the director's "rapidly maturing abilities with digital cinema."

"Tirador," featuring Jiro Manio, Kristoffer King, Coco Martin, Nathan Lopez and Jaclyn Jose, had its world premiere at the Toronto IFF in September.

"This is a fiction film, but Mendoza's impressive skill is to impose a calculated narrative onto Manila's constant unpredictability, shaping its ground-level chaos into art," Bailey said in his essay.

'Independencia'

Raya Martin ("Autohystoria") made history as the only Filipino on this season's list of 28 winners to win a Hubert Balls Fund (HBF) from the International Film Festival of Rotterdam (IFFR).

Martin's film "Independencia," set against a backdrop of the American occupation of the Philippines in the early 20th century, won in the Script Development Category of the HBF, according to a statement from the IFFR.

Martin received his first IFFR grant or the Prince Claus Fund, amounting to 15,000 euros (P960,000), for his film "Independencia" as part of the 46 CineMart Projects 2007. The film was even chosen as the Best CineMart Project of 2007.

Arkeofilms

Arkeofilms, the independent film production company behind Mario Cornejo's and Moster Jimenez's "Big Time," is looking for actors for a short film adaptation of scriptwriter Butch Dalisay's story.

Auditions are being held from Nov. 10 to Dec. 1 for the roles of Sammy, a street-smart boy; Felipe, the smooth-talking single father; Connie, the strong-willed and poised school principal; Mr. Manalo, the rich businessman; and Julie, a young nurse grief-stricken by the loss of a beloved patient.

Miranamedina' s "The Islanders" to screen at the Chicago Fil Am

"The Islanders" (Taga-Isla), directed by Miranamedina, is selected to screen at the Chicago Filipino American Film Festival, which runs from November 9 to 11 at the Chopin Theatre.

Told in exacting detail with archival photography and eyewitness testimony, the documentary is a fascinating look at Corregidor, an island fortress at the mouth of Manila Bay which was built by the Americans in preparation for enemy attack. There were five villages with a population of Filipino civilians and Philippine scouts. The island had electric cars, movie houses, service clubs, sports facilities, schools, churches, and free military transports to Manila.

But the ravages of World War II erased everything. Since most of the books on Corregidor only focus on its military history, historical vacuum exists. The need to fill that vacuum in turn led to the making of this documentary.

The film focuses on the Filipino pre-war life in bottom side as related by Dr. Selma Harrison-Calmes based on diaries, oral accounts by his mother, grandparents, and uncle.

The film features over a hundred prewar photos from personal collections and archives including probably the oldest extant document – a certificate of marriage officiated in 1880.

"The Islanders" is produced by Miryad Cuts in collaboration with Corregidor Foundation, Inc., Corregidor Historic Society, The Corregidorians, USA, National Commission on Culture and the Arts and the UP Film Center.

Miranamedina was the U.P. Film Center scholar to the Film and Television Institute of India where she obtained a diploma in Cinema major in Film Editing. She graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Sto. Tomas and studied Humanities at the University of the Philippines. An award-winning film editor, she has edited all the feature films of alternative filmmaker Tikoy Aguiluz. "The Islanders," which she researched and worked on for over a year, is her first feature-length documentary.

Young poet overwhelmed with Palanca win

While it takes most artists and writers years peppered with heartbreak and disappointment before making it in the literary circle, the road to success has been relatively shorter and easier for Carlos Piocos, first place awardee for the Tula (poetry in Filipino) category of the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature 2007, out-performing writers his senior both in age and experience.

And he is just warming up.

At only 23 years old, Piocos, a masters student at the University of the Philippines Diliman, is one of the youngest winners in the major categories of this year's Palanca Awards. He now joins the field of veteran poets, who have received recognition from the same institution and other credible literary bodies here and abroad.

Piocos' collection of poems "Corpus," which delves into the lives of a historian, an undertaker and a poet, won critical acclaim among the Palanca judges.

"I really feel privileged, honored (about the award), but it was really unexpected. I never expected to win this early," Piocos admitted.

Piocos would not have joined the Palanca awards if not for the prodding of family and friends.

For him, writing poetry is more about self-expression rather than an attempt for recognition.

"Poetry is an attempt to find a language, to put feelings into words during a vulnerable moment of a poet," Piocos stressed, admitting however that winning a Palanca gives him a sense of affirmation as an artist.

"All writers are seeking some degree of affirmation, and Palanca gives you that. It is not about the prize or the compensation, " Piocos added.

Although shorter, the road to success for Piocos was not without setbacks.

Piocos recalls feeling down and depressed when, as a young writer, he failed to qualify in several fellowships for literature. He also tried his luck in English essay writing, but failed to make the cut.

He also attempted to express his artistry through plays, but this too was not a bed of roses for Piocos. Last year, his entries in the tula category of the Palanca Awards did not make it to the winners list.

"I was really humbled by my earlier experiences. All along, I thought my creations were good enough but then I realized that there are still areas I should work on," Piocos added.

It was only after he shifted to the Filipino medium that Piocos felt comfortable with his writing, effectively translating his feelings to words.

"Writing in our language worked better for me. I think that my works in Filipino were more heartfelt and really mirrored my emotions," he said.

With his success early on, Piocos intends to pick up where he left off. Piocos is now writing several poetry pieces in Filipino, which he intends to compile into a book.

World Vision to stage benefit concert for children

A group of pop singers have agreed to set aside their fat fees to stage a pre-holiday benefit concert to fund the child sponsorship program of World Vision, a Christian development relief and advocacy and non-profit, non-government organization dedicated to working with children since 1957, as it celebrates 50 years of initiating grassroots development.

Nikki Gil, Christian Bautista, Sam Concepcion, Reymond Sajor, Girl Valencia, The CompanY and Martin Nievera are among the artists set to perform in the "Celebrating Life" concert on Nov. 24 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Plenary Hall.

"World Vision has already helped some 122,000 children (and their families) by supporting education, providing capacity building basically empowering communities to develop themselves as a whole. We source funding to support these worthy projects," said David Liban Jr., direct marketing manager for World Vision.

Sponsoring a child requires only P450 a month (or P15 a day). This amount is enough to make one child's dream of having an education come true. "World Vision would normally target around 1,500 child beneficiaries nationwide. Below that any initiative is bound to fail. This is identified by the communities we work with. Once it is done we look for sponsorship funding while benefactors fall under the wing of an existing World Vision project," said Liban.

Once a donor has been allocated, child beneficiaries are subjected to funding. "A benefit concert supported by named artists is one way of raising money and public awareness for these projects. World Vision's initiatives are normally grassroot-based. We follow Jesus Christ's example to love one another, especially the children and the poor," Liban added.

NUJP statement on the NPC mural issue

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines is saddened and appalled by
the defacement of the press freedom mural commissioned from the Neo-Angono Artists Collective by the National Press Club.

Absolutely nothing can justify the indignity done to a work of art that, ironically, seeks to honor the Philippine media's struggle for press freedom, a struggle, we would like to stress, that is far from over.

The alterations on the mural were not only an aesthetic outrage, they constituted censorship, an act that should have been anathema to any media organization worth its salt, and made worse by the fact that the message that was censored was one against censorship itself.

The explanations of the Club's officers have only served to bolster suspicions that the defacing of the press freedom mural was meant to please the guest of honor at its unveiling, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

We can see how unveiling the mural would have been a rebuke to a president under whose watch the most number of journalists have been murdered – 53 at last count.

However, to the National Press Club and other colleagues in media, these we have to ask:

When you say the NPC must be "apolitical", isn't this denying the historical fact that the freedom to write the truth was won through political struggles that included media and journalists? That during times of intense political crisis, journalists have taken up the cudgel and fought for the freedom to report the truth?

When you erased the statement of the International Federation of Journalists on
the dangers the anti-terrorism law posed to press freedom, the alibata K – a
fighting symbol – from the arm of a revolutionary leader, or the NUJP from the
banners of protesting media organizations; or when you changed the headline on the abduction of Joe Burgos' son and the faces of Randy David and Juan Mercado, was the outcome a more accurate picture of press freedom in the country?

Sadly, this we have to say:

Ordering the alterations is akin to rewriting a critical yet accurate report to avoid incurring the ire of the powers-that- be or appease a patron. And we, in the media community, know by what word such an act is known by. It is definitely
not truth or ethics.

"A writer is an editor of memory. In writing we make the loves we should have made, wage wars we should have waged. It doesn't always make up for the real
thing, but it does have its rewards."

PWU Independent Film Group 4th Art Film Festival

The 4th Art Film Festival of the PWU Independent Film Group will be held at the Philippine Women's University Manila on December 10 & 11, 2007.

This inter-collegiate festival is open to all college student filmmakers from any school or university, with a vision to promote cinematic talent, and the enthusiasm to share one's creativity.

COMPETITION MECHANICS:

The competition is open to college student filmmakers currently enrolled in any college or University in the Philippines.

All entries are to be shot using any type of film / video camera and must be submitted in DVD format.

Entries must have been completed not earlier than June 2007, and have not been entered in any other competition or produced for commercial
purposes.

Running time for all entries is 10-20 minutes.

Interested participants must submit the following on or before 5:00 PM on November 30, 2007 to the Division of Student Affairs Office of The Philippine Women's University Taft Avenue, Manila c/o Paula Peralta:

>Title of Entry
>Production Company
>Director/ Filmmaker with contact no.
>Synopsis in Filipino or English
>Running time of entry

All entries will be presented to a selection committee prior to the day of the event. Only the top ten entries will be eligible as finalists to compete during the festival.

The top ten entries will be announced on December 3, 2007 via e-mail, and through the IFG website: www.freewebs.com/pwuifg.

The PWU IFG movie clapper award will be given to entries who will excel in the following categories:

Best Screenplay

Best Director

Best Short Feature

Finalists will also receive gift prizes from the festival sponsors, and Certificates of Participation to the festival.
